What is a washer dryer combo?

A washer-dryer combination is a washer and dryer in one appliance. That is, you can wash and dry in 1 wash. With a washer-dryer combination you can choose to only wash your laundry or wash and dry it. Only drying your laundry is not possible with a washer-dryer combination, unfortunately.

When do you buy a washer dryer combo?

The choice for a washer-dryer combination is quickly made when you: have little space or when you want to be cheaper. In terms of space, a washer-dryer takes up the same space as a normal washing machine. It is the same height, width and depth as a standard washing machine. You save on not having to install clothes dryer.

A washer-dryer combination costs about the same as a washing machine, starting at 450 euros. You save quite a bit of money by not having to purchase a clothes dryer, the cost for this starts from 400 euros.

What do you pay attention to when buying a washer-dryer?

In a washer-dryer combination, you can wash and dry. So you only need one appliance, instead of two. Especially if you have limited space in your home, this is ideal. But, how do you know which is the best washer-dryer combination for your household? After all, there are many models to choose from. The differences between them are very big. Energy consumption, noise level and fill weight are all factors to consider in your choice. We explain below exactly what you can look out for:

1. Fill weight

The fill weight indicates the maximum number of kilograms of laundry the machine can wash or dry per wash cycle. The load weight for drying is always lower than the load weight for washing. If the load weight for washing is 8 kg, the load weight for drying may well be 5 kg. This means you will have to dry part of your laundry on the laundry rack or in two parts in your washer-dryer.

2. Noise level

Depending on where you want to put your new washer-dryer, noise level can also be an important consideration. You can divide the noise level into four categories:

  1. Extra quiet: Lower than 71 dB
  2. Silent: Lower than 73 dB
  3. Normal: Between 74 and 77 dB
  4. Loud: More than 78 dB

A tumble dryer always produces the most noise during the spin cycle. Therefore, this is when the noise is measured. During washing, the noise level is considerably lower. A washer-dryer that produces less than 73 dB of noise can safely be placed near your living room or bedroom. If the noise level is higher than 74 dB, you would do well to place such a washer-dryer in an enclosed space.

3. Speed

Most wash-dry combinations have a speed of 1400 rpm, but there are also models available with a speed of 1600 rpm. The downside of washing at a high rpm is that your laundry wears out faster.

4. Depth

Many people choose a washer-dryer combination because it takes up less space than a separate washer and dryer. However, keep in mind that such an appliance still requires a fair amount of space. The depth of an average washer-dryer combination is between 56 and 64 cm. In addition, you need to leave about 20 cm to easily open and close the door.

5. Energy classes

Every washer-dryer has two energy labels. One for washing only and one for washing and drying. Because a washer-dryer performs two tasks, it is usually not very economical. Still, it pays to pay close attention to the energy label. The higher the energy class, the more you save on energy costs. Although a washer-dryer in a higher energy class is often more expensive, it will pay for itself in the long run. Moreover, a label-B washer-dryer is a lot more environmentally friendly than a label-D model.

6. Duration of use

The runtime indicates how long the washer-dryer takes to wash a full drum of laundry clean (cotton program, 60 degrees). The duration of use is between 100 and 250 minutes; quite a big difference. If you find it important that your laundry is clean and dry quickly, then this is definitely a point to pay close attention to.

7. Non-stop wash and dry program

Almost every washing and drying combination has a non-stop wash and dry program. With this program your laundry comes out of the drum washed and dried, without having to set a new program in between. If this seems convenient to you, check before buying whether or not the model you want to buy has this feature.

8. Washing programs

The right washer-dryer combination for you will suit your needs and laundry perfectly. For example, do you wash a lot of delicate clothes? Then it is valuable to invest in a washer-dryer that has a hand wash or delicate wash program. If you have very little laundry, then it’s useful to look for a model with a refresh program or a shortened program.

9. Additional features

Some models have more / different features than others. Think about the features you find useful and then look specifically for a model that has them.

A model with a load sensor weighs how much laundry is in the drum. Then the machine itself calculates exactly how much water is needed, so you never use too much water unnecessarily. A clothes-protecting drum ensures that your clothes wrinkle less and are less likely to be damaged. If your washer-dryer has a steam function, your clothes almost come out of the drum ironed.

Advantages and disadvantages of a washer dryer combo

There are quite a few considerations to make before buying a washer-dryer combo. A washer-dryer combination has both advantages and disadvantages. For example, such an appliance is ideal if you have limited space in your home. However, it also consumes more energy and the programs take longer. You can read more about the various advantages and disadvantages below:

Advantages of a washer-dryer combination

  • Saving space: A washer-dryer washes and dries. So you only need to buy one appliance instead of two. This saves you an awful lot of space. If you do not have a lot of space in your house, a washing and drying combination is ideal.
  • Non-stop wash and dry program: Most washing and drying combinations have a non-stop wash and dry program. With this program, your laundry comes out of the machine washed and dried without starting a new program in between. No more lifting your laundry from the washer to the dryer. Put your laundry in the drum before you go to work and put it in the closet when you get home.
  • Better to buy: A washer and dryer combination is cheaper to buy than a separate washer and dryer. So you can wash and dry in a washer-dryer combination for the price of one appliance. This saves you a lot of money.
  • Handy features: Many washer-dryers have several handy features. This makes doing laundry even easier. A load sensor, clothes-protecting drum, Add-Wash, steam function and self-cleaning detergent drawer are some examples of handy features. So there’s absolutely no need to worry that a washer-dryer combination has fewer features than your stand-alone washer and dryer.
  • Easier to connect: For a washer-dryer combination, you need fewer connections than for a stand-alone washer and dryer. The water for washing and drying is discharged through the same hose, so you only need one connection. This makes the connection much easier
  • No need to empty the condensation tray:Because a washer/dryer is connected to the water outlet, the condensation is also drained directly. Therefore, wash-dry combinations do not have a condensate tray that you need to empty.

Disadvantages of a washer-dryer combination

  • Lower fill weight for drying:The fill weight for drying is always lower in a washer-dryer combination than the fill weight for washing. This means that you will have to dry some of your laundry on the drying rack. If you want to dry your laundry in the machine, you will have to do this parts. Or, fill the drum only half full.
  • Consumes more energy: Compared to a stand-alone washer and dryer, a washer-dryer combination consumes more water and energy. Although the purchase price of a washer-dryer combination is lower, you can save more in the long run with a stand-alone washer and dryer.
  • Dust is not collected:Because the dust is not collected in a filter, there is always some dust stuck in the rubber wall. If you take this out after each drying cycle, it does not pose any problems. However, if you leave it in, it will rotate with your next load of laundry.
  • Shorter lifespan:A washer-dryer performs two functions and is therefore used twice as much. As a result, it does not last as long as a separate washer and dryer. So you will have to buy a new machine sooner.
  • Drying program:Most of the time, you dry your clothes right after washing them. Therefore, not every washer-dryer has an option to dry only laundry. This means that not every washer/dryer can dry your wet laundry in the machine at a later time.
  • Longer program time:A stand-alone washer and dryer will take about three hours to wash and dry your laundry. A washer-dryer combination takes about four hours to do this. So you’ll have to be a little more patient.
  • Crumpled laundry:Because the drum of a washer-dryer is smaller than the drum of an ordinary dryer, your laundry has less room to dry. This causes more wrinkles in your laundry.
