Best Dishwashers for a Large Household 2024

When looking for a dishwasher for a large household, there are a number of factors to consider. These include the number of different programs, the number of place settings, the energy label and any additional features such as refilling the rinse aid when it runs out. The market is full of choice and, as a consumer, you have a tremendous amount to choose from.

In other words, picking out a new dishwasher is not that easy. To get you started, we’ve put together a list of the best family dishwashers for 2024.

Best freestanding family dishwashers

The biggest advantage of a freestanding dishwasher is that you don’t have to sacrifice any kitchen cabinets. Keep in mind, however, that you can’t put a free-standing dishwasher just anywhere; you’ll always need a connection for water and electricity. A free-standing model is often a good choice for a large family, as it can be slightly larger than a built-in dishwasher.

Are you looking for the free-standing dishwasher that delivers perfectly clean dishes? If so, take a look at the best freestanding dishwashers of 2024.

Best built-in dishwashers for a large family of 2024

If you opt for a built-in dishwasher, you have to keep in mind that you will have to sacrifice a kitchen cabinet and therefore storage space. You’ll also have to choose between a fully integrated model and one where the control panel is on the outside. Which one is best for you depends entirely on what you like. A fully integrated model blends in with the design of your kitchen, while the other option means you can always see that there’s a dishwasher in your kitchen. The advantage of an external control panel is that you can always see which program is running, how long it will take and the temperature at which your dirty dishes will be washed. The control panel on the outside does have the advantage that you can always see what program is running and how long it will take and what temperature your dirty dishes will be washed.

When is a dishwasher suitable for a large family?

A narrow dishwasher is very convenient when you have limited space in the kitchen, but for a large household it is not the best option. This is because you will not have enough space to wash all your dirty dishes at once. As a result, you’ll still have to wash a large portion of your dishes by hand or run an extra half load. The reason you bought a dishwasher is often to save time, so this isn’t really convenient.

Which dishwasher is right for your family depends on the dishes you can fit into it. A small dishwasher will allow you to wash around 8 place settings at a time. An XL dishwasher will hold about 12 dishes while an XXL dishwasher will hold up to 14 dishes. A single place setting equals one plate, one glass and one set of cutlery. XXL dishwashers can therefore hold at least 14 plates, or half and large pots and pans.

It is also wise to think about a separate cutlery drawer. It usually holds a lot more cutlery than a basket in the bottom drawer, and it also takes up less space. This means you have plenty of room for the rest of the dishes.

An energy-efficient dishwasher is also a good option. This is because most energy-efficient dishwashers use much less water than washing a lot of dishes by hand. This means that a good dishwasher is not only more convenient, but also more economical.

Finally, a tall dishwasher is an option. It can be placed under a higher countertop or freestanding as a standalone unit. The appliance takes up less space in width, offering more space in height. This is a handy solution if you don’t want to sacrifice too much space. In some cases, the dishwasher will be slightly higher than the countertop, which is not always nice. So think carefully about where you want to place the dishwasher.
