Reasons for a stinky dishwasher
The tips below will help you understand why your dishwasher stinks and on what works well to fix it.
Your dishwasher stinks because you’ve left your dirty dishes on too long
The caked-on food residue from your dirty dishes can cause unpleasant odors to come out of your dishwasher. Even though the appliance is made of material that doesn’t absorb odor easily, some bad smells can actually linger in your dishwasher.
Clogged filters cause bad smells
Your dishwasher will smell if you don’t clean it regularly. Leftover food can clog the filters, preventing the water from draining away properly, which causes odours. Cleaning the filters properly is the only solution. You can do this easily with hot water and mild detergents. It is not necessary to immediately buy a new dishwasher if you are experiencing odor problems. With some baking soda, white vinegar and an intensive program you can remove most odors.
First, make sure the dirty water is drained away. Then, place some baking soda on the bottom of the empty dishwasher and throw a generous splash of white vinegar on top. Let this soak in for a few minutes and turn on a program with a high temperature. When the dishwasher stops, the foul odors will be gone.
But prevention is better than cure. To prevent your dishwasher from becoming smelly due to the above causes, clean it regularly. Clean the filters with hot water and rinse the spray arms with a rinse aid before putting them in the dishwasher. This will prevent the food residue and odors from making your dishwasher smell like wet dog.
