How long does a drying programme take

A normal drying program takes about 90 minutes when using a condenser or air-flow dryer. Heat pump dryers take a little longer to dry your laundry because they use a lower drying temperature. However, they use considerably less energy and so your laundry lasts longer. Many tumble dryers have several drying programs that vary in length. For example, a fast drying program, or an eco-program that takes longer. Nowadays, many new dryers have a residual time indicator. This indicates how long it will take before your laundry is completely dry.

How does a washer-dryer work

With a washer-dryer combo you can both wash and dry, thus saving space in your laundry room or bathroom. Because you also only buy one appliance instead of two, you also often save money with a washer-dryer combo. Because of the washer-dryer combo, you don’t have to transfer your laundry to another appliance when it’s washed clean and needs to be dried. Just like a regular washer and dryer, a washer-dryer combo has different wash and dry programs. However, washer-dryers often have a smaller fill weight for drying than for washing. In addition, washer-dryers have higher energy consumption and are slower to wash and dry than two separate appliances.

How a dryer works

How a dryer dries depends largely on the type of dryer. Condenser dryers and air-dryers use an electric heating element combined with centrifugation – in which the dryer’s drum spins very quickly to squeeze moisture out of the laundry. Heat pump dryers have a heat pump and a refrigerant instead of the heating element. The heat pump converts the liquid refrigerant into gas form. This releases warm air, which heats the drum and your laundry. This method is a lot more energy efficient, making heat pump dryers cheaper to operate. However, the drying temperature remains relatively low, so it takes a little longer for your laundry to dry with a heat pump dryer. In addition, like the other types of dryers, a heat pump dryer also uses spin while drying.
