Best heat pump dryer for a small budget

Tumble dryers are generally not a casual purchase, especially a heat pump dryer can be quite expensive. Even if you are stuck on a budget, there are fortunately still plenty of heat pump dryers to be found. Keep in mind that the dryer has fewer options for ease of use and / or less advanced drying programs.

Beko, Indesit and Zanussi make clothes dryers for friendly prices, but more expensive brands such as Bosch, Samsung or AEG also sell cheaper heat pump dryers. Below you will find the best heat pump dryers for a small budget.

Best heat pump dryer buy; what to look for

If you need a new dryer, it is best to buy a heat pump dryer. These will keep your energy costs down and your laundry will stay nicer for longer. However, as tumble dryers have an average lifespan of 12 years, you can sometimes lose sight of what you need to look out for when buying a new one. Therefore, below you will find a list of tips on what to look out for when buying a new clothes dryer.

Compare different types of dryers

When it comes to clothes dryers, you have the choice between an air-flow dryer, a condenser dryer and a heat pump dryer. The air-flow dryer is becoming less popular by the day because they have a very high energy consumption. The opposite is true for heat pump dryers, which are very energy-efficient and are the most widely sold today. The condenser dryer is in between. Another difference between the condenser dryer and the heat pump dryer is that the heat pump dryer works with a heat pump and a refrigerant, while the condenser dryer dries with a heating element. That hot air can be harmful to your laundry, and can cause your clothes and bedding, for example, to shrink or wear out.

Condensate Drain

Another big difference between the different dryers is that the air-dryer draws the humid air out of the room during the drying process by means of a hose through a window or a hole in the wall. Condensate dryers and heat pump dryers have 2 ways to get rid of the moisture; either through a reservoir (also known as a condensate pan) or while drying through a hose to the water outlet. If you have a water outlet in the room where your dryer is located, we recommend this option. This way you do not have to worry about the moisture in your dryer. If you do not have a water outlet in your laundry room, you should consider emptying the tank after running a drying program.

Filling weight

The fill weight is one of the most important features of a dryer. It determines how many kilos of laundry can fit into the drum per drying cycle. We recommend that you buy a dryer with at least the same fill weight as your washing machine. This ensures that all your wet laundry fits into the drum of your dryer. Are you buying a new dryer and washing machine? Then use the overview below as an indication:

  1. A 6 or 7 kg dryer is suitable for a household of 1 or 2 people.
  2. A household of 3 or 4 people will need a dryer with an 8kg fill weight. Most heat pump dryers have a 8kg fill weight.
  3. A household of 5 or more people will need a dryer with a fill weight of 9 kg or more.

Energy consumption

The energy label tells you how energy-efficient a dryer is. Earlier we explained that the heat pump dryer uses less energy during drying than the other types of dryers. But then there can still be a difference in the energy consumption of 2 different heat pump dryers. If you want an energy-efficient heat pump dryer, choose a model with energy label A++ or energy label A+++. With a heat pump dryer with energy class A+++ you can save up to 888 euros on your energy costs.

Ease of use

Today’s dryers all offer some smart features to make drying your clothes, bedding and other laundry as easy as possible for you. These include options such as a self-cleaning condenser, app-based operation, delayed start and an illuminated drum. Do you think you and your household will benefit from this? Then choose a heat pump dryer that has these features.

Noise level

Almost all clothes dryers make a lot less noise than the average washing machine, but the noise can still be disturbing. If you have an interest in a quiet clothes dryer, you should look for one that produces less than 65 dB (decibels) during the drying cycle. Heat pump dryers are divided into 3 categories when it comes to noise level: loud, normal and quiet. A dryer is rated “quiet” if it produces less than 65 dB.

Drying programs

Heat pump dryers have different programs for different types of laundry. For example, there are special drying programs for wool, shirts, silk, bedding and towels. These programs ensure that your laundry is dried perfectly and your clothes stay beautiful longer. Almost all modern clothes dryers also have an eco-program, to further reduce energy costs. There are also drying programs that get your laundry extra dry.

Build quality

The build quality of a dryer says something about its sturdiness and expected lifespan. Looking at the build quality, all dryers are divided into basic, middle and top class. If the build quality is not mentioned with a dryer, the brand and the price can also be an indication of the build quality. According to the Consumers’ Association, these are the best brands for clothes dryers: Miele, Bosch, Siemens, AEG and Samsung. All these brands have heat pump dryers in their range. These brands are generally more expensive, and therefore score less well in the category “price-quality ratio” according to research by the Consumers’ Association. Brands that do score well in this category are Beko, Indesit and Zanussi
