Buying a small washer dryer combo

Would you like to buy a washer/dryer combination? Then you should ask yourself a few questions. For example, think about the size you want and whether there are any other space-saving options. Here are the answers to the two most important questions.

When is a washer-dryer small?

A washer-dryer is small when it is about 55 centimetres wide (including the cabinet). This is around 10cm smaller than a washer/dryer with a load of 10kg for washing and 8kg for drying, which are often around 65cm wide.

Even with a small washer-dryer, you should expect to have at least 50cm of front opening space to be able to open and close the door properly. If the door does not open properly, it will be difficult to load and unload your laundry.

Also at the back, you should expect to need about 15 inches to accommodate all the plugs and hoses.

Built-in washer-dryer

If you are looking for a small size washer-dryer because you don’t have that much space, you may want to consider a built-in model. This means that you can hide the appliance neatly away in your kitchen or bathroom, without having to take up any extra space.

Mindful of this, however, is that there are far fewer models to choose from when it comes to built-in models. Not every washer-dryer can be built-in, making it much harder to find an energy class A model, for example. You will have to adapt your requirements to what is on offer.

What to look out for when buying a small washer/dryer combination?

Do you want a small washer/dryer combination instead of a separate washer and dryer? First of all, you should consider that the fill weight of a small washer/dryer is much lower than that of a normal model. So first weigh how much laundry you actually have. In general, a 1 person household will have 5 kg to 6 kg of laundry and a 3 person family will have 8 kg per wash. Don’t forget to take into account how many times you wash. Even on your own, you can easily end up with 10kg of laundry if you only do one load once a week.

And a small washer/dryer is often placed in a small space, so the noise level also becomes an important factor. So always try to choose a model that produces less than 73 db of noise. This way you know for sure that you won’t be bothered by the noise. This level is always measured at its loudest: when the machine is spinning, during washing and drying, the noise level will be even lower.

The different options of the washer-dryer should also play an important role in your choice. For example, if you care about washing your laundry correctly you should look at the different programs that the washer-dryer has. For example, some items can only be dried at a certain temperature or require a special wash cycle for a specific fabric.

And finally, it is also worth checking out the energy class of the wash and dry combination. With a washer and dryer in one, the energy consumption is often a bit higher than you are used to. Energy class A is the most economical and energy class F the least. On an annual basis, this can make a big difference on your energy costs, so it’s wise to calculate for yourself what each model can cost you.

The pros and cons of a small washer-dryer

Many brands offer small washer-dryers, from siemens, miele and whirpool to aeg. All have different advantages and disadvantages, but there are also some that apply to any washer-dryer.

Advantages

There are some advantages of the washer-dryer that are obvious, but you may not know everything yet. Here we have listed the most frequently mentioned benefits of a washer-dryer for you.

A small washer-dryer replaces two appliances

The biggest benefit is that a washer-dryer is a washer and dryer in one, so you don’t have to buy two separate appliances. However, be aware that a small washer and dryer may not have the same capabilities as a stand-alone washer and dryer. For example, a stand-alone washing machine may have many different programs that better suit the way you want to wash your laundry. Washing and drying in one go

Most washer-dryers have a non stop function that allows you to wash and dry your laundry in one go. This is very handy for example when you don’t have that much time. You turn the appliance on in the morning, you go to work and when you get home you only have to take out your laundry and put it away.

The washer-dryer combination continues to work non stop, so there is no need to set a drying programme after the wash. Please note that the non stop function is not available with all wash programs. If you have a full load of 8 kg, 9 kg or 10 kg, chances are you can only dry between 4 kg and 6 kg. You will not be able to wash and dry non stop, but will have to reduce the weight of your laundry to the maximum dry weight first.

The washer/dryer combo is easy to hide

A small model washer/dryer is easy to fit in with the rest of your home. If you have a spare space in your hallway, utility room or bathroom, a washer/dryer can help fill that space.

Instead of having to install a separate washer and dryer in a different location, you can now have all those features in one place.

Please note that a washer/dryer combination always requires a connection. It needs to be able to supply water and electricity.

Disadvantages

The mistake that many people make when buying a washer-dryer is that they focus too much on the benefits. It sounds very appealing to have one appliance that can do the work of two, and they forget that a washer and dryer is not the same as a separate washer and dryer.

You’ll have less choice

Not all brands offer small washer-dryers, so it’s not always possible to get the model of your choice in a small size.

That means you’ll probably end up with a model that doesn’t have all the features you’re looking for. Instead of energy class A, you might end up with energy class C, and the small washer-dryer might not have all the wash programs you’re looking for either.

Some brands do cleverly capitalize on the demand for small washer-dryers. For example, the aeg l7wb86gw is available in multiple sizes. The model comes with a fill weight of 8kg for washing and 6kg for drying, as well as 6kg for washing and 4kg for drying. Note that the smaller model with energy class D is considerably less efficient than the larger version with energy class C.

A different fill weight for the washer and dryer

The drum of a washer-dryer combination has a separate maximum fill weight for washing and drying. This is because you need more space in the drum to dry laundry. On average, the difference is between 2 kg and 4 kg. If you can wash 8 kg in your washer-dryer, you can therefore only dry 6 kg.

A small washer-dryer has a smaller fill weight than a normal washing machine and dryer, so you should take into account that you can sometimes only dry 5 kg or 4 kg at a time. This is not always practical for a large household, as it can mean that you have to dry several kilograms of laundry in a different way.

If you’re wondering how much a 6kg fill weight means exactly, you should consider that a household of one person will have around 6kg of laundry. For 2 people, you should consider 8 kg, and a family of more than 4 will wash around 9 kg.

It’s hard to find a small washer-dryer with energy class A

The technology of washer-dryers is not yet as well developed as that of the washing machine and dryer separately. It is already quite difficult to find a normal washer-dryer with energy class A, and if you are looking for a compact model it doesn’t get any easier.

The combination of the small fill weight of the drum and the heating element that is used to dry your laundry is a real energy guzzler. That’s because, with the same amount of energy, you can dry a 10kg load instead of a 5kg load.

Instead of energy class A, most washer-dryers have energy class C or D. Don’t be alarmed by this, as the rules regarding energy labels have been tightened up considerably in recent years. A washer-dryer in energy class C was probably classified in energy class A or higher before this change.
