What to look out for when buying a 8kg washing machine
Energy rating
The energy rating of a washing machine is also known as an energy label and indicates how much energy a washing machine consumes. Energy efficient washing machines are often more expensive to buy, but because they use so much less energy, they actually save you money. To be considered an ‘energy-efficient washing machine’, it needs to be rated A, B or C – with energy label A being the most energy-efficient. Most 8kg washing machines are rated A, B or C, with only a few models rated D.
RPM
RPM tells you how many spins the drum completes per minute while spinning. The faster the drum spins, the drier the laundry will come out of the washer. For the driest possible wash, choose a washing machine that spins at 1600 rpm. There are 8kg washing machines available that spin 1600 rpm, but 1400 rpm is more common. This is also considered high rpm.
Spinning Noise Level
The noise level of a washing machine indicates, in decibels (dB), how much noise a washing machine makes while spinning. Washers with 8kg load typically fall into the ‘normal’ noise range, with 74dB to 77dB. For a quieter machine, choose a model with a noise level of 74dB or lower. A washing machine is very quiet when it makes less than 72dB of noise.
