Top loading washing machine

Does your back hurt while washing or are you looking for a narrow machine because you have limited space? Then a top loading washing machine is probably for you! This type of washing machine is slightly higher and has the door on top, making it easier for you to reach the drum.

What is a top loading washer

Top loading washing machines are a bit narrower than normal washing machines

Most of the washing machines you come across have the door at the front. This is called a front loading machine. A top loading washer has the door at the top, making it easier for you to load and unload your laundry.

Besides the location of the door, there are a number of other differences between front- and top-loaders. The size is one example. Top loading machines are slightly taller, but also a lot narrower than regular washing machines. This also immediately makes them have a relatively small drum. Top loaders have a width of 40 cm and a height of 90 cm. A front loader is about 60 cm wide and 85 cm high. As a result, the top loader takes up very little space in your home.

Top loaders are slightly higher than front loaders. This difference may seem small, but for people with back problems, this can make a lot of difference! Because the door is at the top of the washing machine, you don’t have to bend over as much when you take your laundry out of the drum.

However, you should note that because the door is at the top of the washing machine, you cannot put your dryer on top of a top loading machine.

Buying a top loading washing machine: what to look for

There are far fewer top loading washing machines available than front loading ones. Your choice in this regard is therefore not very large. Nevertheless, there are always a number of models on the market that you should choose from. What exactly is important when choosing the right top loader for your household? Then see below.

Filling Weight

The more fill weight a washing machine has, the more laundry will fit in the drum. For this reason, the fill weight is also called the washing capacity of the washing machine. Because top-loading models are a lot narrower, they also have only a small drum. Most top loaders have a 6 kg capacity. Some top-loading washing machines have a capacity of 7 kg. How much fill weight you need depends on several factors. The size of your household plays a very big role in this.

In general, it is recommended that a household with 1 or 2 people should get a washing machine with a capacity of 6 or 7 kg. Are you considering a top loading machine, but your household has more than 2 people? Then we recommend that you still look at front loading washing machines, these often have a washing capacity of more than 7 kg. It’s important that the amount of wash weight corresponds to the size of your household, otherwise you’ll be using your washing machines very frequently and that will cost you unnecessary amounts of water and energy.

Energy class

Energy class is also known as energy label. This indicates how economically a washing machine uses electricity. To be considered an “energy efficient washing machine,” the appliance must be energy class A, B or C. Unfortunately, most top loading models have energy class D or F. However, for the environmentally conscious people and the people who like to keep their energy bills low, there are top loading machines on the market that have energy class C, but the prices of these machines are slightly higher. However, you’ll often make up for this in the long run, because these energy-efficient washing machines cost you much less in consumption.

RPM

The spin speed of a washing machine indicates how many rounds the drum turns per minute while spinning. The faster the spin is, the drier your laundry will come out of the washer. If you want your laundry to be as dry as possible, you need a 1600 rpm washing machine. However, there is no top-loading washing machine that reaches this RPM. Most top loading models make 1200 rpm (rounds per minute), and some 1300 rpm. At 1200 rpm, your laundry will get dry enough so that you can hang it up. At 1300 rpm, it will be just a little bit drier.

Noise level

A washing machine’s spin cycle can be quite noisy. If you want to know how loud your new washing machine is, look at its noise level. This indicates in decibels (dB) how much noise the top loader produces when it is at its loudest – when the centrifuge is on. 78 dB or more is considered loud, 74 dB to 77 dB is considered normal, 72 dB and 73 dB is considered quiet, and 71 dB and less is considered extra quiet. A top-loading washing machine can fall under any noise level.

Washing programs

There are an increasing number of different wash programs for all kinds of items and laundry. Depending on what’s hanging in your closet, you may need such specific wash programs. Think of special wash programs for down, jeans, shirts, sportswear or in connection with allergies.

Ease of use

Washing machines seem to be offering more and more options by the day to make it easier for us to wash. For a top loading washing machine, you can think of features such as a load sensor, residual time indicator, start delay and add laundry in between. Could these features help you with your laundry? Then choose a top loader that has these options.

Pros and cons of top loading washing machines

For some, a top loading washer is perfect, yet for others there are some drawbacks to this type of washing machine. We have discussed all the pros and cons of top loading models in this article. In conclusion, we would like to summarize it once again for you in the following 2 rows.

Pros

  1. A top loading washing machine is a small machine and takes up less space. They are only 40 cm wide.
  2. The top loading model is higher and the filler opening is on top, which makes it easier to reach the drum and less bending over.
  3. Top loading models have a 6kg or 7kg fill weight, and are therefore perfect for a small household with 1 or 2 people.

Cons

  1. Most washing machines sold are front loaders. This leaves you with fewer options if you have your sights set on a top loading washing machine.
  2. You have fewer options in terms of fill weight, the wash capacity of this type of washing machine is up to 7 kg.
  3. Because the fill opening is on top, you can’t put a dryer on top of it.
  4. Top loading models often have a lower speed, usually with only 1200 rpm, sometimes 1300 rpm.
  5. Top loader models are not the most energy efficient. Energy class A and B do not exist, energy class C does.
