What is the best brand for a dishwasher?

The Consumers’ Association has tested several dishwashers of each brand, and this showed that the models of the Miele brand are often rated the best. It should be noted, however, that they score better on all fronts, but are slightly slower than the other models.

On the other hand, Miele offers the best dishwashers when it comes to how clean your dishes get, ease of use, the number of types of dishwashers in the range, the amount of dishes that fit in the machine and the number of different wash programs. Also, a model from Miele is often an energy efficient dishwasher.

Finally, the best dishwashers from Miele are praised for their longevity. On average, a freestanding dishwasher can run for about 5,000 washes, which equates to 14 years for the average family.

What other brands were good?

In addition to Miele, there are several other vendors that make sure your dirty dishes get clean again. Bosch and Siemens are the brands that manufacture and sell most dishwashers. You can go to them for a freestanding dishwasher, but you can also find a good built-in dishwasher.

AEG and Whirlpool are the ones to go to if you are specifically looking for a built-in dishwasher, while for the best freestanding dishwashers you should look at Beko and Inventum.

The top 10 for the best dishwashers are as follows:

  1. Miele dishwasher
  2. AEG dishwasher
  3. Whirlpool dishwasher
  4. ATAG dishwasher
  5. Siemens dishwasher
  6. ETNA dishwasher
  7. Beko dishwasher
  8. Bosch dishwasher
  9. Inventum dishwasher
  10. OK dishwasher

Brands for a cheap dishwasher

The price of a good dishwasher starts at €350, but can go up to €1700. It is mainly the brands Beko, Inventum, OK, ETNA and Whirlpool that offer dishwashers in a lower price range. You should also bear in mind that the lifespan will be slightly shorter, with all these brands, the dishwasher will need replacing after about 1500/2000 washes, which is equivalent to 4/5 years.

A cheaper dishwasher is often not an energy-efficient dishwasher either. The energy class of a freestanding dishwasher priced up to €500 is usually energy label E, at best you can find a model with energy class C.

The fact that a dishwasher is a bit cheaper doesn’t say anything else about how your dirty dishes come out. The best dishwashers for a lower budget will wash just as clean. The dishwasher will probably only use a little more water, and the exterior material may not be as sturdy. You’ll also likely have fewer different types of wash programs.

With these brands, you’ll find the best cheap dishwasher:

  1. Whirpool
  2. Inventum
  3. Siemens
  4. ETNA
  5. Beko

What should you look for when buying a new dishwasher?

When looking for a new dishwasher you should not only focus on the brand. It also depends on your kitchen and your needs as to which dishwasher will suit you best. With built-in dishwashers in particular, it is important to measure everything carefully before buying. Most dishwashers have a recess height of between 82 and 92 centimetres, which suits most kitchens.

When measuring, remember that the floor in front of the dishwasher is often slightly higher, so you will need to leave some space.

Front panel is the same. Measure carefully to make sure your front panel covers the entire undercounter dishwasher. If you do not want your dishwasher to be visible, you can choose a built-in or undercounter dishwasher. In some cases, you can even mount the panel of your kitchen on the front, allowing the dishwasher to blend in. Keep in mind that built-in dishwashers often require such a panel.

Small dishwasher / mini dishwasher

A normal dishwasher is 60 inches wide and will fit in most kitchens. There are also built-in dishwashers that are narrow and have a width of 45 centimetres. Such a narrow dishwasher is very handy if you don’t have a lot of space to spare.

A so-called mini dishwasher is only 45 centimetres high, allowing you to easily place it under a lower surface.

Please always pay close attention to the dimensions you need before purchasing.

Type of dishwasher

A dishwasher can be fully integrated, meaning it is a built-in dishwasher with the control panel on the outside. You then only need to fit the front panel yourself.

A semi integrated dishwasher has the control panel on the outside, which means you can turn your dishwasher on without opening it.

A undermount dishwasher doesn’t need a front panel. This can be annoying, as the look doesn’t match your kitchen cabinets.

The final type is the freestanding dishwasher. This model can be placed anywhere in the kitchen, making it more visible.

Noise level

It is especially important that your dishwasher does not make too much noise if you have an open-plan kitchen. Freestanding dishwashers in particular can be a problem, as the sound is not additionally muffled by the built-in cabinet.

A noise level of 43 dB or quieter is considered quiet. Anything between 44 and 47 dB is normal, and above 48 dB the noise level is loud. So the best undermount dishwasher in an open kitchen produces no more than 47 dB!

Place cutlery

How your cutlery fits in a dishwasher can be done in two ways. One option is to put your cutlery in a separate cutlery drawer in the top rack, or in a basket in the bottom drawer.

With a separate cutlery drawer you can fit more cutlery and have more space. The cutlery in the bottom drawer, on the other hand, will be cleaner.

The number of place settings

The maximum capacity of a dishwasher is indicated by the number of place settings. One glass, one plate and one set of cutlery can be placed in each place setting. Most dishwashers can hold around 14 place settings.

Don’t forget that 14 place settings may not be enough if you also use your dishwasher to clean pots, pans and other kitchen appliances. Want to get your dishes clean? If so, don’t put more dishes in your machine than the number of place settings indicates.
