Buying a tumble dryer - what to look out for
Types of dryers
There are three types of dryers: the vent dryer, condenser dryer and heat pump dryer. Heat pump dryers are the most widely sold nowadays because they are the most energy efficient dryers. This is good for the environment, but it also keeps your energy costs down. Heat pump dryers are more expensive to buy, but because they are so energy-efficient, they are still usually the cheapest option when you need a new dryer. The condenser dryer uses more energy, and the drain dryer uses the most. The condenser dryer is still sold quite a lot, but the drain dryer is sold very little.
Condensate drain
When drying laundry, moist air is released. This moisture needs to be transported somewhere. The dryer leads the moist air with an exhaust hose to the outside through a window or a hole in the wall. With both the condenser dryer and the heat pump dryer, you can choose between draining condensation through the water drain or storing it in a reservoir (also called a condensate pan). If you choose the latter, you don’t need an outlet hose for the condensate drain. You will just need to empty the condensate pan into the sink after drying. If you have a water drain in the room where your dryer will be placed, we recommend connecting it to the water drain with a drain hose. Then there is no need to empty the tank.

Filling weight
The fill weight of a dryer indicates how much laundry will fit in the drum while it is drying. It is important that you choose a dryer that is proportionate in size to the size of your washing machine and household. Does your dryer have too little or too much fill weight? This makes washing less pleasant and you will use more energy than necessary. We therefore recommend that you buy a tumble dryer with the same filling weight as your washing machine. That way, you will always have a full drum when drying. Are you buying a new washer dryer and washing machine? Then take the following recommendations as an indication:
- For 1 or 2 people, a clothes dryer with 6 or 7 kg. Dryers rarely have 6 kg fill weight, but 7 kg is more common.
- For 3 or 4 people: a clothes dryer with 8 kg. Most clothes dryers have a filling weight of 8 kg.
- For 5 people or more: a clothes dryer with 9 kg or more. 9 kg fill weight is also common.
Noise level
The noise level of a clothes dryer indicates in decibels (dB) how loud the appliance is while drying. Almost all dryers are a lot quieter than the average washing machine, but the noise can still be perceived as disturbing. For example because your house has thin walls or you plan to dry at night. In terms of noise level, clothes dryers are divided into 3 categories: loud (67 dB or more), medium (65 dB or 66 dB) or quiet (64 dB or less). Most clothes dryers have sound levels of medium or quiet. Heat pump dryers most often fall under sound level quiet.
Ease of use
Build quality
The build quality of a dryer says something about the sturdiness and expected lifespan of the device. Looking at the build quality, all dryers are divided into basic, mid-range and top-range. If the build quality of a dryer is not mentioned, the price and brand can also give an indication. According to the Consumers’ Association, the best brands for clothes dryers are: Miele, Bosch, Siemens, AEG and Samsung. These popular brands are generally more expensive to buy, so they score less well in terms of price-quality ratio. Brands that do score well in this category are Beko, Indesit and Zanussi.
