Energy-efficient dryer

Drying your laundry with a clothes dryer costs – on average – quite a bit of energy. The most energy-efficient way of drying your damp laundry is by hanging it up. Don’t have the time or space to do this? Then an energy-efficient dryer is a great alternative, which is good for the environment but also keeps your energy costs down! The best Energy efficient dryer

What makes a dryer energy efficient

There are several specifications of a clothes dryer that you should look at to determine if it is energy efficient or not. The type of dryer plays a major role, but so do its energy label and annual energy consumption. On this page, we explain everything you need to know about energy-efficient dryers.

The types of dryers

There are three types of tumble dryer: the air dryer, the condenser dryer and the heat pump dryer. The energy consumption of the clothes dryer is the highest, followed by that of the condenser dryer. Heat pump dryers use the least energy per drying cycle and keep your energy costs nice and low. Heat pump dryers are also the most expensive of these 3 types of dryers, but because they are so energy efficient, this is often still the cheapest choice.

Energy label

The energy label of a clothes dryer indicates how efficiently the dryer dries your laundry. A dryer is considered energy efficient if it has energy label A++. The most energy-efficient dryer is a heat pump dryer with energy class A+++, which is best for the environment and your wallet! The same applies to energy labels: the better, the more expensive. But keep in mind that an energy-efficient dryer will keep your energy costs so low that you will ultimately save money.

Energy consumption per year

Most manufacturers and suppliers of clothes dryers also list the energy consumption per year of each dryer. Most heat pump dryers have energy class A+++, but that doesn’t mean you’ll all use exactly the same amount of energy. By looking at the energy consumption per year, you can better compare different heat pump dryers.

Energy costs

The table below explains the energy and water costs by energy class. The data is all ‘per year’.

A dryer with a high energy class consumes much less energy than one with a low energy class. But are you also cheaper in total with an energy efficient dryer? Because usually tumble dryers with a high energy label cost more than one with a low energy label. We have found this out for you in the following paragraph

A cheap dryer could turn out expensive

The table below shows the total costs per energy class.

  • $ 1066,6
  • $ 1106,4
  • $ 1108,9
  • $ 1073,4
  • $ 1071,1

From the table you can see that you save money already after 5 years with an A+++ dryer compared to all lower energy classes. Even if you spend more money at the beginning, the tumble dryers with a higher energy class will save you a lot of money in the long run. Looking for a new clothes dryer? Then always try to buy one with the highest energy class. You are not only doing good for the environment, but also for your wallet!

Energy labels for dryers explained

In general, the rule of ‘cheap is expensive’ applies to clothes dryers. This means that the energy costs of a cheap dryer are so high that you will be better off buying a more expensive, energy-efficient one. A heat pump dryer with energy label A ++ or higher is indeed expensive to buy, but consider it an investment. If you buy a cheaper clothes dryer with a lesser label, you will end up paying more over time because your energy costs will go up. That’s why we’d like to give you a little more detail on how energy labels for clothes dryers work.

In the picture you see an example of an energy label for a clothes dryer. We explain what each part means.

  1. On the blue line you will first see the brand (in this case the brand AEG) and the name of the model.
  2. Below that you will see the different energy classes and, highlighted, which energy label this particular dryer has.
  3. In the square frame halfway the label, you can read what the energy consumption per year is in kWh.
  4. In the frame with the dryer and the cord you will find information about the type of dryer (gas/electric, air extraction/condensation)
  5. The box with the clock shows how long the average cotton drying program takes in minutes.
  6. The box with the t-shirt shows how many kilos of laundry will fit in the drum at one time (this is also called the fill weight).
  7. The box with the speaker indicates in decibels (dB) how loud the dryer is.
  8. The last box with the condensate tray only applies to condensate dryers; it indicates the condensation efficiency class.
