Buying a cheap dryer
Quality and brand
Some people are very attached to certain brands. And for a bigger brand, you often pay more. Research by the Consumers’ Association shows that users of a Miele dryer are most satisfied with their purchase. Miele tumble dryers perform well and do much to improve ease of use. On the other hand, Miele is the most expensive brand for clothes dryers. Other brands that score high according to the Consumers’ Association are Bosch, Siemens and AEG.
But of course the brand and the price range are no guarantee of a good appliance. The brand and price may be an indication of good design and materials, but it is not a guarantee. And it certainly does not mean that cheaper clothes dryers are necessarily bad. Beko is a good example of a brand that offers good value for money. According to the Consumers’ Association, they score the highest in this category. Beko clothes dryers are both good and cheap! In addition, users of Indesit and Zanussi clothes dryers are also very happy with the price-quality ratio.
More features and better specifications
As a rule, a cheap clothes dryer uses more energy per drying cycle than a more expensive clothes dryer. This is mainly due to the type of dryer, but also to the energy label. There are three types of tumble dryers, we will be happy to explain the differences:
- Airflow dryers are often the most economical to buy but consume the most energy. At the time of purchase it is therefore advantageous, but for your energy bill and the environment it is not a good choice. For this reason, the extractor dryer is also being sold less these days. Also good to know about the air-flow dryer: this dryer can only discharge the moist air through a window or a hole in the wall.
- The energy consumption of the condenser dryer is lower, but it is slightly more expensive. With condenser dryers, the moisture is drained into a condensate pan (reservoir that you must empty manually), or you can choose to connect your condenser dryer to the water drain.
- The heat pump dryer is the most energy efficient of the three. Therefore, buying a heat pump dryer will also be more expensive, but because they are so economical, you can still save money with them. With a heat pump dryer in energy class A+++, you can save up to € 75,- per year on your energy bill. You can also connect your heat pump dryer to the water drainage, or use a condensate drip tray.
More about the energy class. This is also known as an energy label and determines how efficiently a dryer dries your laundry. A heat pump dryer with energy class A+++ will generally be a lot more expensive to buy than, say, an air vent dryer or condenser dryer with energy class B, but it will save you money in use. Of course, that’s a choice you have to make yourself.
