Whether you have young children, thin walls or your dryer is in an open-plan kitchen, it can be nice not to make too much noise. Of course, there are many other important things to consider when buying a new dryer. Besides noise level, here are a few tips on what to look out for.
Type of tumble dryer
With regard to tumble dryers, you can choose between a duct dryer, a condenser dryer and a heat pump dryer. The energy consumption of a hood dryer is the highest, while that of a heat pump dryer is the lowest. For that reason, the heat pump dryer is the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly dryer. The most silent washing machines sold today are heat pump dryers.
Fill Weight
The fill weight of a clothes dryer indicates how much laundry will fit in the drum at one time. Ideally, you should choose a dryer with at least as much fill weight as your washing machine. Different noise levels
Depending on the number of decibels a dryer produces when drying, it is classified in one of three categories; loud, normal and quiet. In the following overview, we explain the differences and which noise level is appropriate for which type of household.
Loud noise level
A clothes dryer is considered “loud” when it produces 67 dB or more while drying. This is quieter than an ‘extra quiet’ washing machine, which is why you can safely put these two appliances in the same room. For example, a laundry room, the bathroom or an enclosed kitchen.
Normal noise level
A clothes dryer is labeled with “normal” noise level when it produces 65 dB or 66 dB of noise. Again, this is obviously a lot quieter than the average washing machine, which is why you can put them in the same room without worry. Drying your laundry at night would be no problem, even if your dryer is facing a bedroom.
Sound level quiet
We speak of a quiet clothes dryer when it produces 64 dB or less when used. So a quiet dryer will still make noise, but it is anything but overpowering or distracting.
