What is a silent tumble dryer?

If you have a noisy home or like to switch on the tumble dryer at night, it can be annoying if your tumble dryer makes too much noise. Quiet dryers are available for this reason. These produce less noise than the average, allowing you to run your drying programs without worry.

How much noise a tumble dryer produces is indicated by its noise level. This measures how much noise the dryer produces in decibels (dB). The lower the number of decibels, the quieter the tumble dryer. A tumble dryer should not produce more than 65 dB to qualify for the ‘quiet’ noise level. The noise level of a tumble dryer can be found on its energy label.

Buy a quiet tumble dryer; what should you look for?

We understand when someone wants to buy a tumble dryer that does not make too much noise. Whether you have young children, thin walls or your dryer is in an open-plan kitchen, it can be nice not to make too much noise. Of course, there are many other important things to consider when buying a new dryer. Besides noise level, here are a few tips on what to look out for.

Type of tumble dryer

With regard to tumble dryers, you can choose between a duct dryer, a condenser dryer and a heat pump dryer. The energy consumption of a hood dryer is the highest, while that of a heat pump dryer is the lowest. For that reason, the heat pump dryer is the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly dryer. The most silent washing machines sold today are heat pump dryers.

Fill Weight

The fill weight of a clothes dryer indicates how much laundry will fit in the drum at one time. Ideally, you should choose a dryer with at least as much fill weight as your washing machine. Otherwise, look at the size of your household. If you’re a one or two person household, we’d recommend a 6kg or 7kg load. If you’re a 3 or 4 person household, you should go for an 8kg dryer. Do you have a household of 5 or more? The energy rating of a tumble dryer indicates how energy efficient it is. You should choose a tumble dryer with a good energy label to save on your energy costs, but also because it is an environmentally friendly choice. To dry your laundry in the most energy-efficient way, choose a heat pump dryer with energy class A+++. These are slightly more expensive to buy than, say, a condenser dryer with energy label B, but they will save you money in the long run.

Drainage of condensation

The moisture that is extracted from your clothes during the drying cycles has to go somewhere, of course. Dryers have different methods for this. With a vented dryer, the moist air is expelled through a hose – either a window or a hole in the wall. With heat pump dryers and condenser dryers, this can be done either via a reservoir (condensate drain that needs to be periodically reloaded) or via water drainage. Most heat pump and condenser dryers offer both of these options.

Ease of Use

New clothes dryers are offering more and more options to make drying easier for the user. These include a self-cleaning condenser, delayed start, an anti-cleaning phase and control via an app. Does your family like to use these gadgets? Then choose a tumble dryer that has these features.

Drying Programs

During the course of your family or household, you may have a need for specific drying programs. Dryers, like washing machines, offer all sorts of different programs designed for a particular type of load. These include wool, baby clothes, shirts, sportswear, extra dry, silk and special programs for allergy sufferers. For this purpose, clothes dryers are divided into 3 categories: basic, mid-range and top-range. Most quiet tumble dryers fall into the top category. However, not all manufacturers and suppliers of tumble dryers are as transparent about the build quality. If this is not mentioned, you can also look at the price range and the brand. Of course, an expensive A-brand dryer is not necessarily a good choice, but the brand and the price can be an indication that the appliance is made with care and from good materials. According to the Dutch Consumers’ Association, these are the best brands for tumble driers: Miele, Bosch, Siemens, AEG and Samsung. In general, these brands are also on the more expensive side, so they score less well according to the Consumers’ Association when it comes to value for money. Brands that do score well in this category are: Beko, Indesit and Zanussi.

Different noise levels

Depending on the number of decibels a dryer produces when drying, it is classified in one of three categories; loud, normal and quiet. In the following overview, we explain the differences and which noise level is appropriate for which type of household.

Loud noise level

A clothes dryer is considered “loud” when it produces 67 dB or more while drying. This is quieter than an ‘extra quiet’ washing machine, which is why you can safely put these two appliances in the same room. For example, a laundry room, the bathroom or an enclosed kitchen.

Normal noise level

A clothes dryer is labeled with “normal” noise level when it produces 65 dB or 66 dB of noise. Again, this is obviously a lot quieter than the average washing machine, which is why you can put them in the same room without worry. Drying your laundry at night would be no problem, even if your dryer is facing a bedroom.

Sound level quiet

We speak of a quiet clothes dryer when it produces 64 dB or less when used. So a quiet dryer will still make noise, but it is anything but overpowering or distracting. You can place this type of dryer in an open kitchen or in a room next to a bedroom without worrying. You can easily switch it on before going to sleep, so your laundry is perfectly dry the next morning.
