What is a quiet washing machine?

A quiet washing machine is a type of washing machine that is designed to produce as little noise as possible. Washing machines make a lot of noise by nature, especially during the spin cycle. This is when the drum of the washing machine, which holds the laundry, spins at high speed to squeeze as much water out of the laundry as possible. The faster the drum spins during the spin, the drier your laundry will be. This rapid rotation causes vibrations, and that can make a lot of noise.

A quiet washing machine is designed to create less vibration during the wash. This makes them much quieter than other washing machines. Of course, silent washing machines also make noise, but the inconvenience is much less.

The noise level of a washing machine is indicated in decibels (dB) under the specification ‘spin noise level’. So this indicates how much noise the washing machine makes when it produces the best vibration – during the spin.

What to look out for when buying a quiet washing machine?

The noise level can be very important when you are buying a new washing machine, but of course there are more things to look out for. Here are our tips:

Fill Weight

The fill weight indicates the capacity of the washing machine; how many pounds of laundry will fit in the drum. If you are looking for a quiet washing machine, it is best to go for one with the amount of fill weight that suits your household. If it’s a one to two person household, then a quiet 6kg or 7kg machine is best. If you have 3 or 4 people, an 8kg machine would be better. If you have a household of 5 or more, you should look for machines with a 9kg or 10kg load.

Energy Rating

The energy rating of a washing machine was formerly known as the energy label, and it indicates how energy efficient a washing machine is. If you want an energy-efficient washing machine, it’s best to choose a model of energy class A, B or C. An energy-efficient washing machine is often more expensive to buy, but it saves you money in use because it keeps your energy bills low. In addition, an A-rated washing machine is also the best choice for the environment.

RPM

The RPM of a washing machine indicates how many rounds the drum spins during the spin. The more rounds it makes, the drier your laundry will come out of the machine. In addition, the RPM can also be an indication of the noise level, but these are not necessarily linked. There are also washing machines that run at very high speeds (1400 rpm or more) that are also quiet. If you want your laundry to be as dry as possible and make as little noise as possible, look for a quiet washing machine with a rotational speed of 1400 rpm (rounds per minute) or more. Most quiet washers run at 1400 rpm, but there are also quiet washers that run at 1600 rpm.

Ease of Use

There is a lot of technology available today that makes it easier for you to wash. These include a load sensor, delayed start, add wash, a self-cleaning detergent drawer, automatic detergent dosing and control via an app. Do you think you can benefit from all this while doing your laundry? Then make sure your new silent washing machine incorporates this technology.

Wash programs

There are an infinite number of different wash programs, and every washing machine offers different ones. If you need a specific wash cycle, for example, due to the composition of your household, make sure that the washing machine you buy actually offers that wash cycle. There are special programs for delicate fabrics, stains, sportswear, baby clothes, extra hygienic washing and shirts, among others. Which programmes should your new washing machine feature?

Different noise levels of washing machines

Do you want to know when a washing machine is ‘loud’, ‘normal’, or ‘quiet’? We’re here to answer that question. Washing machines are rated in decibels (dB for short). The following chart explains how the different sound levels are distinguished and which sound level is appropriate for which situation.

Loud sound level’

Washers that produce 78 dB or more of noise during spinning are considered “loud” washers. These are fine machines to put in the shed or attic, but it is not recommended to wash with them if they are in the house and someone is sleeping.

Sound level ‘normal’

Most washing machines have this sound level. This is where the spin reaches between 74 dB and 77 dB. Again, you don’t want to turn these machines on when you want to sleep. Ideally, you should put it in the attic, but an enclosed kitchen or bathroom will do.

Silent noise level

Silent washing machines produce between 72 dB and 73 dB during spinning. A quiet washing machine can therefore be turned on at night, so that you can get your laundry out of the drum the next morning. You can also put a quiet washing machine in an open kitchen or next to a bedroom.

Extra Quiet

These machines are quieter than quiet, producing a maximum of 71 dB! Therefore, you could possibly put these washing machines in an office, or in a studio apartment. You can also feel free to turn them on when you go to sleep.
