Buying a new washing machine: what to look for?
On average, we buy a new washing machine once every 10 years. Because these appliances last so long, we sometimes forget exactly what to look for when buying a new one. For this reason, we have developed this buying aid. It tells you exactly what to think about when you’re shopping for a new washing machine – white, black or silver.
Front loading or top loading
Which side of your new washing machine do you want the door on? Most people go for a front loader, which has the door on the front – very handy if you want to put something else on top, like a dryer. Do you want the door to be on top? Then choose a top-loading machine. This can be nice when loading and unloading your laundry because you don’t have to bend down as much. Just keep in mind that there are a lot fewer top loaders on the market. Therefore, finding a black washing machine that is also a top loader will be a challenge.
Fill Weight
The fill weight of your washing machine says something about the size of the drum and how much laundry you can wash at a time. A household of one or two people will usually have enough for a washing machine with a 6kg or 7kg fill weight. Families of three or four people are more likely to need an 8kg or 9kg washing machine. Are there more of you? Then look for a machine that can hold at least 10kg of laundry.

RPM
The RPM indicates how many rounds the drum of a washing machine makes per minute. The more revolutions, the drier the laundry will be. That way you don’t have to put your laundry in the dryer, but can hang it up until it’s dry. Washing machines usually make between 1100 and 1600 rpm. 1400 rpm is the most common for black washing machines.
Washing programs
Not all washing machines offer the same washing programs. Before you buy a new washing machine, it’s a good idea to map out which different wash programs you use now and which wash program you still want. This could include delicate, hand wash, cotton and wool. Nowadays, many washing machines give you even more options, such as special programs for allergies, faster washing, jeans, baby clothes, sportswear and shirts.
