Buy a 1400 or 1600 RPM washing machine

The RPM of a washing machine indicates how many rounds the drum makes per minute while spinning. The higher the RPM, the drier your laundry will come out of the machine. If you want your laundry to be as dry as possible, choose a washing machine that spins at 1600 rpm. There are many 1600 RPM washing machines on the market right now, but there are still more 1400 RPM washing machines out there.

The difference between 1400 and 1600 rpm can be expressed in the residual moisture percentage. For a 1600 rpm washing machine, it is 44%, and for a 1400 rpm washing machine, it is 50%. Are you going to buy a new washing machine? Then the difference in price between these 2 washing machines is only small. In general, a 1600 rpm washing machine is slightly more expensive, but the difference is small.

What is also good to know: the RPM indicates the maximum number of revolutions. All washing programs use a different rpm. This is because there are certain materials and fabrics that you do not want to spin at 1400 rpm or more because they will not last as long. You can always choose a lower rpm.

Why higher rpm?

Of course it sounds nice, more revolutions per minute. But what does it actually do for you? One big advantage of a high RPM is that in many cases it is energy efficient. Sure, it takes a little more energy to spin the drum at that rate, but your dryer doesn’t have to work as hard afterward to get your clothes, bedding and towels completely dry. And that’s great, because the energy consumption of the average clothes dryer is a lot higher than the average washing machine.

Not everyone puts his or her laundry in the dryer, of course, because that reduces the life of your clothes. If you prefer to air dry, you will also benefit from faster spinning. This means that your laundry will spend less time on the clothesline.

Especially if you choose an energy-efficient washing machine with many spins, you can save energy. An energy-efficient washing machine has energy class A, B or C. These are often a bit more expensive to buy, but because the energy consumption is so low, you can make huge savings on your energy bill. And that’s good for the environment, but also for your wallet.

Or a lower RPM after all?

If you don’t care much about the number of revolutions, you can also choose a washing machine with a lower number of revolutions. Washing at lower rpm can be a great choice because your energy consumption is lower and your clothes last longer. Most washing machines run at 1400 rpm, but there are also some washing machines that run at 1200 rpm. These have a residual moisture content of 52%.

But before you make that choice, you should know that you can almost always set the RPM of your washing machine on a per wash basis. As a result, washing machines with 1400 or 1600 rpm can also just run at 1200 rpm or lower. This will not make your clothes as dry, but it will last longer.

External drip tray with drain

The disadvantage of an external washing machine drip tray is that your machine will be in water for a while. For example, suppose you run a wash at night and only find out in the morning that your washing machine has leaked, then the material of the machine may have suffered water damage. Your floor may be protected but the electrical components on the inside of your machine may have been damaged beyond repair. A solution to this problem is a drip tray with a drain, which you can easily connect to your water drain. The water then does not stay in the drip tray and the chance of damaging the machine itself is a lot smaller.

You must, however, make sure that you always check whether the drip tray is dry. Because the water does not stay in the drip tray, there is a good chance that you will overlook a leak.
