Buying a brushless washer; what to look for?
If you choose a brushless washer, you automatically have a number of advantages; they are quieter, more fuel efficient and more durable than washers with a brush motor. But there are of course more things to consider when buying a new washing machine. First, you need to decide whether you want a front- or top loading washing machine. The front loader has the door on the front and is the most popular. Many people choose a front loading washer because you can put a dryer on top of the washer. The top loading washer has the fill opening at the top, which makes it easier to reach the drum to pick up your laundry. Both front and top loading models are available with a brushless motor.
Fill Weight
The fill weight indicates how many kg of laundry will fit in the drum at one time. There are several aspects that determine how much fill weight you need. The size of your household plays the biggest role in this. If you are a 1 or 2 person household, you may want to choose a 6 kg or 7 kg washing machine. If you have 3 or 4 people, an 8kg machine would be better. Do you have a household of 5 or more? Then we recommend a 9kg or 10kg washing machine. It’s important to choose a washing machine with a water filter that matches your household size. That’s because if you don’t have enough capacity, you’ll have to wash more often than necessary – which will cost you a lot of water and energy. You also don’t want a washing machine that’s too big. That means you’ll have to save a lot of laundry to fill the drum, or wash with a half-empty drum – which also wastes a lot of water and energy.
Energy Rating
The energy rating is also known as an energy label. It gives you an indication of how energy efficient a washing machine is. The big advantage of a brushless washing machine is that it is automatically relatively energy efficient. But this also falls within a spectrum. A washing machine is energy efficient when it has energy class A, B or C. There are also brushless machines that have energy class D or E. Therefore, if you like to wash energy efficiently or want to be a little extra considerate of the environment, we recommend that you go for an energy-efficient washing machine – one that has energy class A, B or C. These machines may be a little more expensive to buy, but because they are so energy efficient, they can save you up to 200 euros a year.
RPM
How many rounds your washing machine spins per minute while spinning is determined by its speed. The faster it spins, the drier your laundry will be. At 1600 rpm, your laundry will be as dry as possible. There are a number of machines available with a brushless motor that reach 1600 rpm, but most machines reach 1400 rpm. 1400 is also considered a high speed.
Sound level
How loud a washing machine can be is indicated in decibels (dB) under the ‘spin sound level’ specification. Each washing machine is classified into 1 of 4 categories; loud, normal, quiet and extra quiet. A washing machine is referred to as ‘loud’ when it produces 78 dB or more and normal when it produces between 74 dB and 77 dB. We speak of a ‘quiet washing machine’ when it reaches 72 dB or 73 dB and it is an extra quiet washing machine at 71 dB or less. Most washing machines with a brushless motor fall into the ‘normal’ or ‘quiet’ category. Depending on where you plan to put your new washing machine, you may benefit from choosing a quiet or extra quiet one.
Ease of Use
Washers are equipped with more and more options to make washing easier for the user – making each wash a snap. These include a load sensor, delayed start, add wash, a self-cleaning detergent drawer, automatic detergent dosing and control via an app. Make sure your new washing machine has these features if you think you will benefit from them.
Wash programs
Because everyone wants something different, there are many different wash programs. If you have a need for certain programs, make sure that the washing machine you buy offers them. There are special programs for delicate fabrics, stains, sportswear, baby clothes, extra hygienic wash, shirts and more.
Brands
We associate big brands with quality and longevity. And this is not without reason, of course. It is not a guarantee, but washing machines from big brands are more often made of stronger materials and therefore the lifespan of these devices is often higher. A-brands for washing machines include Bosch, Siemens, LG, AEG, Miele and Samsung.
But the brand of a washing machine is of course not everything. Experience has definitely taught us that there are plenty of washing machines in lower price ranges and from lesser brands that also keep working perfectly for years and years. For example Beko, Indesit, Zanussi, Haier and Proline.
As an indication, washing machines have an average lifespan of 10 years.
What are carbon brushes
A carbon brush is the part of the motor that transfers electricity to the motor through the commutator. Carbon brushes transfer electricity to the armature of the motor, then the armature will rotate, which will cause the drum of the washing machine to spin – through the drive belt.
Worn-out is the normal thing about carbon brushes. If they did not wear out, the commutator of the motor would be damaged. Carbon brushes are therefore deliberately made of material that is softer than the commutator. Eventually, therefore, through wear, you will only be left with nodules – and then you will need to replace them. This is because the carbon brushes no longer transfer any electricity into the motor.
In most cases, the carbon brushes of the washing machine motor are easy to replace – this is deliberately designed as it is known to wear out quickly.
Difference between a carbon brush washing machine and a brushless washing machine
In the past, all washing machines had a motor driven by carbon brushes as standard. These provide the electricity that the washing machine needs to run the drum. Nowadays, however, most new washing machines are powered by a different method; the brushless washing machine. As the name suggests, there are no carbon brushes involved. As the name implies, there are no carbon brushes involved, but instead a drive belt that directly keeps the drum in motion.
Recently, another type of motor has been developed for washing machines, which works without a carbon brush and without a drive belt. A magnetic field causes the drum to rotate in this case. This type of motor is called Direct Drive, and is currently only used in washing machines from the brands LG and Haier.
